I owned two Alfa's from the '70s. A '75 Alfasud 1.3 Ti (my first car and an absolutely great one) and a '76 Alfetta GTV 2.0 Lusso. The latter was my ultimate car and I still regret that I sold it to pay for my (failed) marriage. Kept on driving Alfa's though.

Had one of these (manual, Dolomite Quartz over red) for a few years; never understood the hate, absolute love-at-first-drive sort of car & dripping with character. Doesn't hold up in technical comparison to e.g. a well-sorted Porsche but that's not the point. I kind of miss it but parts availability is horrific and only going to get worse.

As the owner of a 1999 model I totally agree, the car has flaws and the reliability is very average. However, put replacement silencers on it and it sounds epic. as you say, the engine really wants to rev up and the power delivered between 4000 and 6000rpm is brutal!! at 6000 change gear and repeat. The way the engine revs and punch has no equivalent in modern turbo engines. charming car. Fun. Feel very very fast for 370-400bhp faster than 4200 gt , Gransport. I drive both

My daily driver is a 2001 fiat uno, 5L/100km, 830kg Parts insanely cheap, just bought a clutch kit for it, cost me 60€

As a young teenager I was a passenger in a FIAT 124. I was astonished, it was just so good in every respect, quiet, comfortable and it clearly had great handling.

As a teen in the late 90s reading about this in Top Gear made me want one so bad, especially since it was so gorgeous. I was bummed that the version that actually came to Canada just wasn't as pretty.

Doesn't explain why all 1960-70s cars rusted.

Great cars, re-build your own twin plate clutch, delete some crappy senors, change tail shaft to proper unijoint with center bearing, drive it's sensible and no probs. I'll be changing my FI to manual shit ad dump the TCU it's just a track setup.

It's poor coating technology that allows the steel to rust.

I owned 3 FIATs , 2 of them at the same time over a 10 year period and one was 12 years old when I got it and didn't have any rust issues at all.

when quality in these cars was put before profits, now its obvious its the reverse.

What worries me most about this car is the thought that the Jaguar will like be more reliable. 😂

If that were true about rusty cars, then every AMC Hornet, and Chevy Vega would have been Soviet steel....I dont think Kenosha Wisconsin, or Flint Michigan bought any Russkie steel...😂

Seats were done by a prominent Italian furniture manufacturer. I forget the name, but tag should be on the seats. Very exclusive, but impossible to justify the price compared to its competitors. The engine and interior, 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Heck, I owned a 1977 124 Spider which I loved (black over red...shit-canned those ugly post-1973 "federalized" bumpers and bolted the early-series bumpers on it and along with 14in silver Panasport wheels) from the mid-'80s to the late-'90s, and it never had a spot of rust on it anywhere! Of course and then again, I lived in an area with probably THE best climate in all of these United States. It's called "Southern California"! ;-) Yep, could never figure out why ANYONE would choose to live where the weather sucks at least half the freakin' year or more, and where cars rust out within 5 years from new. (...hey, just sayin', duuuuude!) LOL

Here in New Zealand I had the misfortune to work in a ckd (completely knocked down) car assembly plant in the 1970s and saw first hand the real reason certain cars rusted so badly. They arrived at the factory in bare steel with a thin coating of oil to prevent rust. We then had to wash this coating off, an impossible job with the time constraints. The cars were then painted, but over the oil, results obvious. . Blame socialist politicians and their pressure groups for these fiascos. They try to dictate what is built, how their built, where and by whom. Let the free market work and keep politics out of business. You'll see similar disasters looming in the idiotic electric car "industry" where these socialist clowns are rampant. Keep up your excellent videos.

Back in the 70:s most car brands where as plegued with rust. My father told it as to be caused by modern methods and design. He owned several Peugeot 404 them where good but his 504 that was an real bucket. He explained it by its construction, a lighter unbody construction or as he said a box-construction giving lots of cavitys for rust as to grow, he also said these cars will rust from inside out! We did lot of rust protective work my dad and I. To be somewhat fare the word about Alfa was exellent cars but as bought and driven by unmature reckless personas that loved sporty driving, pedal to the metal from stage 1 and not so much of else as for an example love and care. Many of them fine Alfas went as blowed out finito bye bye engine and all in an very early stage about two to three years of time and then after as pretty much worthless as no one would buy them.

Such an awesome car, I would love to import one to the US

What does the appetite for SUV has to do with government oversight? The reason cars are heavier is because consumers think a SUV are better options. If anything governments should tax heavier cars and create tax cuts for lighter ones, like kei cars. It's not batteries that are making cars heavier, it's bad consumer choices....seriously...boomers will be the end of us all with your Freudian unresolved issues

Great summary and review of a beautiful car. I still have my 300te with the same interior as this one and it is a nice place to be. The straight-6 12v m103 engine is perfect for this car and sounds right. Unfortunately ULEZ means I can’t drive it when I like so have to save it for special occasions.

Hmm.... I bought a 1969 ALFA spider new and kept it for over 40 years. No issues with rust at all. Supose it depends where you live. At the time i lived in San Francisco and not that far from the Pacific Ocean. I also washed my car frequently and made sure all the undercarriage was clean an all drain holes not blocked. I now have a 2015 ALFA 4C I bought new...carbon fiber and composite body panels don't rust ;-) Real secret is I kept mey car in a garage so not exposed to the harsh condition of weather and never driven in snow conditions.

The Clio Williams handled insanely well. I remember driving in 1999 on the A7 Serravalle-Genova (a highway designed like the Nordschleife, 70km of insane curves and short straights) with my Maserati Ghibli Biturbo and I could not for my life shake away a guy in a Clio Williams. I could out-accelerate him but at every curve he was right on my tail. Eventually I had to let him go and I tried to follow, but over a succession of sharp left-right curves I lost him. Damn that thing handled well.

Another point: please don't fall into the classic British motoring journalist trap of measuring every car against medieval British B-roads. The rest of the world is not necessarily like that, and I absolutely love the way my stiff and sharp '06 Gransport handles on our smooth, well kept Alpine roads. Everything is relative... 😉

Hi Jack, you forgot to mention THE single biggest issue that should concern anyone interested in buying a 3200GT. The thrust bearing on the crank rear has a tendency to fail on the manual cars, causing "crank end float". When the bearing fails, it spins and damages the crank beyond repair. Preventive maintenance / replacement is the only solution, there may be some Maserati specialist that has designed upgraded components but I'm not aware of it.

American watching from the State of Rhode Island in the U.S.-Never owned a Volvo-or any foreign car for that matter-but-have-seen one of these around from time to time-I can count on one hand how many in my life-and always in well-used condition-and always-with just a simple black interior-didn't even know you could get colors-often been curious to know more-fun/interesting review-answered all my questions-including my long-held suspicion that though it said-Volvo-Gia was involved somehow.
